A debt owing
#11
Can we be publicly informed what the item did and who was affected so we know whose is and isn't exempt from taxes? Seeing as I'm sure it couldn't have benefited everybody.

What manner of item puts us so fully in the Citadels debt!?!?

A debt of 1000 gold, a permanent garrison operating under their own remit along with Church representatives, but also the ability to wave law at their own discretion. All while the authorities are prohibited from enforcing the laws that any other citizen regardless of affiliation are expected to follow and, gallingly, expected to "understand" that these agents can blatantly cast aside laws as they see fit in the pursuit of a mandate.

And since the agreement protects ALL such agents from Ralinwood's lawful authorities who is to say what that mandate is at any given time? A lowly conscript need not even check with superiors before wielding the authority of his interpretation to justify any action to be propagating their mandate. At any time they can use any means they see fit for any reason they see fit to prosecute any manner of punishment they see fit. Further, by the terms of this contract, any law abiding citizen of Ralinwood is forbidden in even defending themselves or their comrades from violent accusations. The terms of this agreement only ask the Citadel and the Church to "attempt" to follow the local laws. Verbatim: Attempt.

We pay a steep price indeed for the opportunity to feel a iron fist tighten around us. Carrion, and I imagine a great many besides, are right to be disturbed by the content of this contract.

I for one am curious what the position of the Blood Red Rose chapter is on this agreement and the carte blanche provided to the Citadel.

The way I understand it they used their fancy Kael relic to help us out so they don't have it to caress lovingly anymore. The moment you ask a religious organization to use a once ever relic in their possession you are inviting them to name the price. That said... anybody know where we can find a relic of Kael? Maybe if we replace the one they lost with something else they'll fuck off and let us go back to being heathens in peace.

It is rare enough that you can simply pay fanatics to pick up and leave. Pay as much as you can, as swiftly as you can. I ask that you consider not wagering your lives, wealth is not the highest purpose and a life can have value beyond coin.

I would assume Her Ladyship is either contributing or is planning somehow in some way to take part in solving this dilemma. She seems a truly noble soul in my few interactions with her.

The Rose, like essentially every other of what you call 'factions' in humans lands, is selective in who is 'worthy' of decency and only helps farmers and fisherfolk, who are exempted from this agreement. To be fair, that still makes them better than most, but I assume that still they care not for your ails and are content to leave you to your debt.

My experience with Nobles is that they usually want the peasantry to solve their problems for them.

I wouldn't expect any relief from the debt. Sure would be nice though. Some of that House Gomorrah money to ease the burden that's been signed for.

What are the terms of defaulting on the debt when Ralinwood is inevitably broke?

I expect that if you cannot pay, you will be made to enter into war. Best then to decide if you mean to war or pay before a single silver is given, lest you purchase the blade that will run you through.

If the Lady is not assisting in these payments, then I expect this is a contract written expressly written to be used as justification for the outcome when it is broken, a bargain without honour from a position of dictation to the needy, and not mutual benefit.

Dear Citadel and other interested parties,

I have consulted with a person who told me to say the following:
"You may state that it has been impartially reviewed by the leader of Ralinwood's chapter of the Blood Red Rose, Sir Ostrozne Ghul Zjadacz, Order of the Shield, Paladin of Roland, who finds it legally unsound and in violation of the ideals and principals of honorable law and the White Raven Accords."

I am currently under the impression I do not need to pay these taxes until the document is properly ratified.

I will hold the taxes in question in private bank until the issue of legality of payment can be clarified.

Sincerely,
Sevatar Loken

I have done the sums, albeit in haste, to look at what times are necessary for the payment. On the chance that it is relevant for anyone's decision making. If you are well versed in arithmetic, please perform them on your own and let me know if I am correct.

I assume taxes levied each month for 12 months a year, and quarterly interest of 2 % compounding, initial loan of 1000 gold, and 50 members contributing per levy.

1 year's repayment - 13 and 2 of 10 silver per month per member
2 year's repayment - 6 and 9 of 10 silver per month per member
3 year's repayment - 4 and 8 of 10 silver per month per member
4 year's repayment - 3 and 7 of 10 silver per month per member
5 year's repayment - 3 and 5 of 100 silver per month per member
6 year's repayment - 2 and 7 of 10 silver per month per member

Perhaps when you choose to tax the trees I imagine wild elves might consider this. Until then I am more than willing to offer various body parts of those who harm our people instead.
