Hi everyone. I was having a hard time reading through the pavilions thread so I edited the more relevant posts together. It actually reads like a cohesive story/scene so I thought I'd share it here with you.
Lord Bantry steps out from behind the small canopy. He straightens his coat and takes a seat beside Lady Urqaurt.
Lt. Farraday
A man dressed in a very well maintained Navy dress uniform joins the nobles under the canopy. He spares a brief glance to both the seated nobles, then takes up a standing position next to them.
Urquart stands.
"My thanks to you all for your presence today. As you know, we are threatened by orcs massing in the mountains. As some of you know, we may face mercenary forces as well, to strike from the water. My family has no great history in war times, but we are thankful to have Lord Bantry among the leaders of this land, and Second Lieutenant Farraday of the Duvainian navy, who we hope will bring our plight to greater attention. We are here today to share knowledge, evaluate these threats and choose a course of action."
She gives a shallow curtsey to the 2nd Lt. and resumes her seat.
Lt. Farraday
Farraday turns to Aminata a moment of confusion on his face when she introduces herself.
"Lady Gomorrah, I was not aware of your presence here. I have however had gotten your man Brennus' account second hand."
He then turns to the assembled citizens.
"As the navy has become aware there is a massing of ferral orcs to the south poised to strike at the foundling settlement of Ralinwood. I have been sent by the First Sea Lord himself to investigate this matter and return with my recommendations."
"I am sure I do not need to tell you citizens of the strategic value of this settlement. As the Duvain's northern most port, the importance of this settlement is only growing the escalation of political friction with Berphaunt. It may become very important that this settlement remain available for resupply of the navy."
"My most pressing concern at this time is the lack of information we have regarding our foes. I have been informed that the Orcs are well equipped and in vast numbers, but in the two weeks I have been in this settlement I have not received so much as single first hand account."
"With such a lack of relevant information I find it very difficult to determine the best course of action at this time, and even worse I am unsure over the recommendations I should be making to the Sea Lord. For this reason I have asked the Triumvirate to assemble the citizens to hear the concerns and voice of the citizens of Ralinwood."
Grimnir
"Brennus briefed you on what we know. I can say that mounting an offensive against the mine will be imperative, especially if we expect to emerge from this with minimal casualties. We are aware that the Bloodbringers united the clans, but the Serrated Blade Chief is their war leader. He consults with a magic user, a wizard of some sort. The prisoner we took suggests that the tribal chieftains were charmed and this is why the Serrated Blade leads." Grimnir shrugs hopelessly. "I volunteer myself and those that will follow me to lead a spearhead assault, but Brennus has prepared a better plan than that and I think it should be suggested. I will say that this will require military prowess and anyone seeking to be a leader in this role must be a veteran of combat."
"If Levi feels he can handle running the primary defenses, I am happy to function in the aspect of a vanguard and harass our foes until such a point a time that we have an advantage. Whatever is required of me to ensure we all survive this, I am open to. I cannot condone following an untrained and unproven person into this battle however. I understand that people wish to see the Smith rally our forces, but I am not comfortable with this in any form."
Grimnir shakes his head sadly. "I want to see we all survive a force of united Orcish clans and a mercenary army and can continue to establish this place and ensure all here are made stronger for the outcomes. We must stand united, but we must stand united behind someone qualified to lead."
Levi
*Levi shakes his head.*
"I beg your pardon if I am speaking out of turn, sir, M'Lord, M'Lady. I mean no ill intent but seek to address some of the conversation I am overhearing. Firstly, fighting folk want leaders they look up to and respect, and as it stands many here share neither of those feelings for me, so I would make a poor choice for any captaincy.
Secondly, we are conflating our position in all this with what our egos think we are capable of. We number less than a hundred, fewer still capable at arms. Either the Noble Muster and Naval Service arrive in numbers sufficient to counter the orc threat, with our assistance, or we abandon the settlement. Or we are put to the sword. Either way, though we may come to play a pivotal role, we are as a militia not only a small consideration, but not a basis around which a reasonable plan of attack may be formed. Whatever force comes to our aid, we are part of their designs and under their leadership, and not the other way around. Will we need leaders on the battlefield? Perhaps, if we are not under direct command. But we may worry about that in due time.
For now we can only hope to draw as potent an armed force as we can to our aid, and to learn and relay as much information about our foe as we can. So do not scramble to assign ranks and captaincies that will too soon be taken away. Let's have out all the information we know, here and now for all to hear, so that the Nobles and Naval Service may make the most pertinent decision.
Jarl Grimnir is speaking of the tribes by name, and that seems to me as good a starting point as any. Who are these tribes? Do we know anything about their resources, leadership, flaws we can exploit? Even knowing the names so we do not confuse them with the orcs of Cassan is a good start to prevent espionage on their part."
Lady Urquart
"I believe Levi speaks wisely. These plans are brave and patriotic but we simply don't have the numbers to handle this on our own. That is why it is so important to give lieutenant Farraday an accurate picture. We need support from the navy and that means giving good reasons. "
She looks to the lieutenant.
"I believe we may need naval forces to support us against the White Company and army forces against the orcs. Not that I discredit the navy, you understand, but that we all must play to our talents. "
She considers Aminata.
"And perhaps we should reduce the number of high value kidnappings they may take advantage of. "
Bantry
"Then at least we have some agreement on our needs. I will return to the capital to petition for army forces. Miss Gommorah, it would be an honour if you would select a guard for yourself and accompany me, to lend the weight of another voice. Lt. Farraday, I will pray that you give sound council to your superiors and that they will hear it. If this petition must keep me long in the capital, I will send another member of my house to hold my position."
Lord Bantry steps out from behind the small canopy. He straightens his coat and takes a seat beside Lady Urqaurt.
