As snow begins to fall, covering the land in a thin white veneer, a peaceful quiet rolls in to soothe the troubled people of Duvain. High Winter has been saved, Father Nicholi has recovered the High Winter wishes and Chugsy has been put down... again. Things finally seemed to be calming down in the port town of Ralinwood. But it was not meant to be.
The winter tranquility deepens to an ominous silence. Merchants are seen traveling the roads less and less. Farms, once bright with light and warm with the High Winter spirit, have become cold and dark.
Rumors of the Blood Red Rose filter to Ralinwood - a tale of the brave knights and pages who were investigating a distant farm gone dark. What they found was horrible carnage. No survivors. Undead have begun to plague the Duvainian countryside, crawling out of the Catacombs. Sightings of undead have spurred the Citadel to abandon the farms and roads they once patrolled and increase their patrols of the known Catacomb entrances, still protected by the creature called Mother. All their attempts to break through her protective barrier have failed thus far, so they can only react to undead she has released to harry the Duvainian people.
During the day, highwaymen and bandits have become more bold. The roads are no longer safe during the day or night and merchants will not venture out without guards. Trade has suffered and supplies are running thin in many towns, including the port town of Ralinwood.
The labyrinthine catacombs have many entrances and reach far and wide. For every restless dead cut down by the righteous champions of Light, ten take their place. The Blood Red Rose is stretched thin trying to cover the farms, even arming the local farmers in an attempt to bolster their numbers. Despite the Citadel and Blood Red Roses’ best efforts, whole farms have been destroyed. Neither the Citadel nor the Blood Red Rose appear to be able to cope with Mother’s escalating attacks on the living. Both organizations have put out the call for help.
