Laws - Riven Shadowlight - 07-12-2018 Riven wanders over and nails a small stack of papers to the board. RE: Laws - Dr. Moran - 07-12-2018 Hello, Ralinwood. If you're like me and don't want to spend six hours reading about how to buy yourself a noble title that you can never afford, I made a condensed version that skips the council bits. Please read the full laws at some point, but consider this a quick reference guide: WRITS You want a writ? Find a warden. We will issue writs of protection to you that last four months but can be revoked if you break the law. Come find us BEFORE THEY EXPIRE to get a new one near the end of that duration. After living here a year you get a permanent one which is much harder to get revoked (don't do treason). If you were born in Duvain you just get one. Visitors MUST present themselves to receive a writ, they also must pay a tariff to the town in either goods or coin. MINOR CRIMES (don't do these) Judgements and punishments of Minor Crimes are able to are made by law enforcement personnel of sufficient rank. -Assault, which is to bring someone harm, regardless of intent. -Petty Theft, which is the taking of goods not belonging to you whose value is under or equal to five gold pieces. -Possession of Prohibited Goods, Weapons, or Alchemies. -Obstruction of Justice, which is any actions which prevents a law enforcement official from doing their job properly. - Impersonating a noble, which is the using of the status or title conferred on a noble person by a person who has not legitimately and properly gained or conferred such status or title to gain, obtain or confer a privilege or benefit, or the claiming of status within, or right to use the name of, a Noble House, by a person who does not belong to that House. - Littering, to make a public place untidy by discarding refuse carelessly. - Infernalism, which is the utterings of infernal nature, or using items of said nature. Indicated by black smoke spewing forth from one’s mouth, or the use of esoteric and ultra-planar foreign items. PUNISHMENT FOR SAID MINOR CRIMES Fines, Suspension of permissions, incarceration or imprisonment, civil service. Upon being convicted of a Minor Crime, punishments may be meted out by local law enforcement. MAJOR CRIMES (really don't do these) Judgements and punishments of Major Crimes are to be made by the ruling body in conjunction with law enforcement personnel. -Dereliction of Duty, which is failing to perform duties that are elected or assigned to you. -Murder, which is taking action against someone which results in their death. -Banditry, which shall be any organized persons who together steal and/or thieve from others -Obviating the free will of others, which shall include kidnapping, holding someone against their will, and the use of duress or coercion to force someone to enter into a contract, agreement or arrangement -Casting of Illegal Magic, which is casting magic, either from memory or an item, from an illegal sphere of magic. -Owning or Trading of Indentured Servants or Slaves. -Theft, which is the taking of goods not belonging to you whose value is over five gold pieces. PUNISHMENT FOR SAID MAJOR CRIMES Fines, Suspension of permissions, incarceration or imprisonment, civil service, execution. Upon being convicted of a Major Crime, such punishments may be meted out by a person who is of a standing of no less than a local governing body, or their agent, assign or delegate. THE REALLY BAD STUFF - BANISHMENT CRIMES -Treason, which is any act which endangers or threatens the Republic, national interest, local Council, or Body politic as a whole, whether by word or by deed or other means, and further, which may be any action undermining the ability of an authority to maintain the safety and welfare of others, carry out governance activities, or the seeking to replace Duvainian governance by empowering, bringing to power, or otherwise showing loyalty and support to, another Noble House, Political Power, Nation, or Being. -Piracy, which is the commandeering or thievery of or from vessels on open waters, harbour, or ports. PUNISHMENT FOR THE BANISHMENT CRIMES (take a wild fucking guess) Oh gee. It's banishment. Who'd have thought? RESTRICTED ITEMS, MAGIC AND ALCHEMY (you need a writ for these or it's a crime) A Writ of Use may be obtained from the Magistrate, Regent, Governor, or Lord or Lady, as is appropriate at the material time. Restricted Magics Summoning Restricted Goods Garrottes Stilettos Summoning Scrolls or Scrolls or Items which reproduce Summoning effects Restricted Alchemies Cindamite Alchemy PROHIBITED ITEMS, MAGIC AND ALCHEMY (you can't even get a writ for these, they're just flat out banned) Prohibited Magics Dark Wytchcraft Necromancy Corrupted Nature Prohibited Goods Scrolls from the Spheres of Prohibited Magics Magic Items containing magic or replicating magin from the Spheres of Prohibited Magics Prohibited Alchemies Ambrosia Death Alchemy Slow Death Alchemy Forget Alchemy Chemistries are subject to a case by case basis, should you come into a possession of a chemistry. Ask an Official for a ruling on said Chemistry. WRITS OF USE Provides a protected person with: the permission to carry and use Restricted items and weapons; permission to memorize and cast Restricted magics, and carry associated items, foci and scrolls; permission to possess, transport and use Restricted alchemies. Condition precedent: must have a Writ of Citizenship or protection. Probationary: Three months (1 Gold) Acceptance Fee: 5 Gold Renewable: One year (1 Gold) May be refused at the sole discretion of law enforcement. Revocable if convicted of breaking a law. May be re-issued at the discretion of an Official or their designate, provided that the revoking official is aware that the revocation is being re-considered and has had an opportunity to voice concerns. WANT ONE? FIND A WARDEN OR OTHER OFFICIAL. Alrighty that's the day-to-day stuff. I mostly copied and paraphrased from the full list so if the grammar is bad blame the pavillions, not me. AGAIN: READ THE FULL LAWS. Not knowing the laws does not protect you should you break them. Then we just laugh at you while we arrest you as well. - Ursel the Warden |
