Potion Phys-Reps - Promises - 05-05-2014

Heya fine folk of Ralinwood forums,

I'm looking for something to use for potion reps. I'm thinking of putting something like red kool-aid in them to make them look appropriate to what they'll be, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for containers.

Suggestions? Big Grin

Personally I wouldn''t use kool--aid.. If it''s the powdered kind it will settle after a while and if it''s the bagged kind.... that stuff can get pretty rancid when exposed to air.. I would suggest using a brightly coloured sports drink like PowerAde or Gatorade.. The stuff is practically neon and with all of the preservatives should make it okay to store for any amount of time.. Now I''m not too sure about how long these would last,, but odds are they would last a lot longer than most things!! Hope this helps!! Smile

The colouring I'm not so much worried about, but I appreciate the idea of using something not going to settle. In particular I'm looking for suggestions on containers for them.

The dollar store near me (Dollarama on Bloor near Bathurst in Toronto) has 6-packs of glass small bottles with cork lids. I see people tie strings to make them necklaces sometimes. Then the tag for the potion is taped to the outside of the bottle, and the liquid is poured inside.

If you can't find anything I can grab you a pack or two.

If you're wanting something permanent that won't degrade on you, I'd recommend gel wax, or resin with a bit of dye. Smile But that's only if you don't want it to come out. I make potion bottle jewellery for people all the time, and those are the two methods I use. (That being said if you happen to want something done, let me know, as I have hundreds of those little glass bottles hanging around that I have yet to use.)

Resin is smelly and needs to be done outside or somewhere with amazing ventilation and that is warm, gel wax can be done indoors on the stove if you're careful and you mind the temperature so it doesn't hit it's flash point and ignite. Just don't stick it in the microwave.

(Or, if you're not worried about the potion being clear, you can always just use regular candle wax. XD But gel wax or resin would definitely look worlds better.)

Both good ideas. Thank you! If I have a rough time with getting them made (I don't think I will - there's a Dollarama or two or similar sort of stores in London) I'll be back in touch. Big Grin

If you go with the bottles with cork lids, sealing them with hot glue or wax will help prevent accidental spills and can also protect the cork from being degraded by whatever you put in the bottles.

The corks that come with the bottles you can buy at Dollarama and Michael's crafts are far too porous I've found while experimenting with them. I have discovered that Michael's sells better corks that work in a pinch but the corks at Canadian Tire or even the rubber stoppers are FAR more reliable. Believe me, as a former boyscout I can vouch for the fact you do NOT want a high-sugar drink leaking on you while out in the woods.

It's not necessary to actually drink a potion given to you; RPing swallowing something is fine. Further to that, a gentle reminder that you should always ask a person if they're okay with eating something being offered to them: never put something in someone else's mouth without their OOG okay.
