"Funny you should say that. Did I mention I had a chat with Rolin at the fire the other night? He spoke to Lord Bantry a few weeks back, and told me that apparently Lord Bantry has appointed him the General of whatever militia we manage to muster in town. He wanted to appoint 4 Captains or something to that effect to oversee whatever campaign it is he has planned with the nobility.
I declined his initial offer but he insisted and I acquiesce to the chain of command. He was meaning to approach Callum and Grimnir next, he said, without sharing details of the fourth candidate. Is any of this news to any of you? I was taken aback for several reasons."

"Oh? This IS news to me... I'm surprised My Lord and Lady neglected to mention this to me. I supposed I was hurried... If you'd like I can ask them what their intent was with his appointment? Why were you surprised?"

"He's not a general," Grimnir says, his voice ringing of a touch of worry. "I have concerns as well. Though if he is electing strong officers to be permitted to have some authority without needing to do paperwork, it may work."

"I had intended to seek clarification myself, given the nature of the involvement we will require from either a coalition of nobles' troops or the Naval Service. My hope was that the Naval Service would broker terms with the nobles, or outright declare martial law if necessary, and we could mount a full-scale campaign.
I don't doubt Rolin's heart and mind are in the right place, but I don't know enough of the man to gauge his experience in warfare. I only know him as a builder, craftsman. He spoke of co-ordination and precision in attack and I suspect that we are not in a place where we can achieve such cohesion in time for the attack, given the overwhelming numbers we face. I was unable to receive any details of the plans laid to make heads or tails of it myself.
I also thought appointing me one of the Captains was not a good idea, but he trusts his own judgement in this and obviously the nobility trust in his planning."

"We shall see what they have to say about Rolin once I speak with them. I would, of course, appreciate yours and Jarl Reikson's company when I speak with them. That should be shortly."
*She pours herself another cup of tea as she speaks.*
"Though if the Jarl here has already been overly taken with his appointment, given that he one of these "strong officers" Rolin has elected, it may be well we go without him."
