The silhouette, possibly as long as the fisherman is tall, shudders, and a flash of light pulses along the line into the rod. It begins to struggle furiously, caught on the line.

As the line is pulled, the four-toed appendage breaks the surface of the water, its texture and colour like a mottled salamander with red veins. The hook pierces through the palm, just off center, and dark ichor bleeds into the dark water. Still struggling, the creature's hand makes a fist and grips the hook awkwardly. Another pulse of light travels up the line into the rod.
